BIOGRAPHY – Captain (Navy) Abdul Karim DUMBUYA

Naval Captain Abdul Karim DUMBUYA is the Commandant of the Sierra Leone Navy Western Naval Command (WNC) which is headquartered in Freetown. The senior officer doubles as the Director of Operations for Sierra Leone’s Joint Maritime Committee. Captain Dumbuya is a Deck Officer (Executive branch) with specialization in navigation.

Capt Dumbuya was born in 1974 in the Karene District, Northern Province and bred in Kambia District. He attended the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School, Rokupr and the Christ the King College, Bo. He has a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Njala University, Sierra Leone and a Master’s degree in regional security studies and civil-military relations from the United States Naval Postgraduate School in California. The senior officer has a wealth of experience and knowledge in maritime security in which he continues to focus his interest in terms of research and study.

Captain Dumbuya was trained and commissioned at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1999 under the Short Service Commission. He rebadged into the Sierra Leone Navy in 2002 after few years of serving in the army. Since then to date, he has successfully completed several professional training both locally and internationally as well as other mandatory military career staff and command courses including junior, intermediate and senior levels.

Capt Dumbuya successfully completed his junior and Intermediate Staff Courses with excellence at the then Horton Academy (now Horton Command and Staff College) in Freetown for which he was selected to proceed for staff college in the USA. He successfully completed staff course at the Staff College of the United States Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA. The senior officer has completed with excellence a number of maritime courses including tactical, operational and strategic modules and held several command and staff appointments.

He also served on peace support operations (PSO) as Senior United Nations Military Observer (SUNAMO) in the United Nations hybrid mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Capt Dumbuya has great interest in maritime security issues and engages in maritime security and safety research with a focus on the GoG domain. He is happily married and blessed with three children.
